CHAPTER
SEVENTEEN
Crouching in shadow, Jed stared down the muzzle of the night sentryâs twelve-gauge shotgun. At this range, the blast would probably kill him. Even if he survived, heâd be severely incapacitated and unable to complete the mission. He stilled his breathing, froze every muscle in his body, and imagined himself dematerializing.
I am vapor.
I am the night.
An owl hooted from a nearby tree and the sentry turned his chin to look in the direction of the call. Then something rustled in the underbrush off to Jedâs right, and the young guard spun counterclockwise thirty degrees, readjusting his aim in that direction. The owl hooted again, as if taunting the armed patrol as he scanned the woods for a target. Suddenly the tree frogs that had gone silent since Jedâs arrival began to trill, joining the owl.
So now the forest decides to wake up, he thought with an eye roll.
Whatever had moved in the brush scuttled around for a second before going still again. The young patrol scowled and marched toward the tree line, sighting intently over his shotgun. Jed tracked the sentry with his eyes but didnât dare reposition. His Mossberg was slung behind his back, which meant his best option was to take the guard with his bladeâproviding the geometry worked out.
The thing in the brush scurried again, but this time, not without consequence. In the corner of Jedâs eye, he saw a ghost-gray shape descending on silent wings, talons bared and silver dollar eyes reflecting moonlight. And as the owl executed his kill, so did Jedâclosing the gap between his hide and the distracted sentry. Like his winged night hunter companion, Jed struck with lethal, silent precision. His knife found its mark, driving into the junction where the neck connects to the base of the skull. He wrenched the blade back and forth, severing the brain stem from the spinal cord, and then pulled the knife out. His adversary dropped like a marionette whose strings had just been cut. Jed caught him under his armpits and quietly lowered the body to the ground until he was staring at the other manâs face from above and upside down. An amber ring flashed around his vanquished adversaryâs irises, and then something biologically impossible happened.
The guard spoke.
âGod canât help you here,â the sentry said, his voice perfectly clear and articulate despite an open mouth pooling with blood. And then the thing that should have been a corpse began to laugh. âYouâre dead . . . ha-ha-ha . . . Youâre dead . . . ha-ha-ha . . .â
Jed stumbled backward, almost falling over a tree root.
Snap to, frogman! the SEAL barked in his head, pulling him out of his funk like a slap to the face. Weâre on the clock now. Check the body and go . . .
Heeding the call from his inner warrior self, Jed returned to the body.
Donât look at his face. Whatever you do, donât look at his face, Jed told himself as he took the black nylon
